The beach with the best nightlife, Phi Phi Island

by - October 01, 2024

When we think of Thailand, nightlife seems integrated in that thought. A trip to this tropical destination is absolutely incomplete without a taste of the throbbing discotheques and bars. While prominent cities like Bangkok and Pattaya have dedicated streets and localities, there isn't a single town in Thailand that is free of bars. While the Bangla Street in Patong, Phuket steals all the limelight for the best nightlife, there is a very unexpected place that really has glitzy evenings. That place (very surprising to some) is Phi Phi Island.

Majority of the tourists do Phi Phi as a day trip. Even we did that, when we visited 12 years ago as a couple. We tend to think that it's a day beach area (like the Ile Aux Cerfs) and the place shuts out after dusk. However in reality, Phi Phi Don is a really big island. (Not Phuket big, but not as small as Dhiffushi) It's a non motorable island and is quite hilly. So if you need to traverse from one end of the island to another, you will need to take a boat for that.

That's why we chose to reside near the Tonsai Pier (the city/island centre). We needed the market with the groceries and restaurants at an arm's length and believe me, it was the best decision ever. The island really goes to sleep at night, and it becomes quite spooky and eerie. So had we been staying on the more peaceful parts, we couldn't have enjoyed the nightlife.

Well the Loh Dalum Bay is an area where you would get transported elsewhere. Surely there are a number of happening bars and clubs in the centre. But the ambiance on that beach is a different scenario altogether! There are elaborate fire shows. We even crossed a burning rope from beneath a few times to get free shots as rewards. Almost every crazy task comes with rewards. You can find weed everywhere and laughing gas is for sale too. The waves often come crashing on the chairs, where you are sitting for watching the fire shows. We loved every moment of the glitz and glamour for the 2 nights we were there and I highly recommend staying at Phi Phi overnight to witness a completely different phase of this lively island.

  1. Am not a night time person, but that laughing gas caught my attention. Seems like a really liberal island with plenty of fun at night, especially the fire shows.

  3. I visited recently and as you said in the day time. I am not much of a night person so guess this is not up my alley but wouldn't mind visiting just for a night

  5. PHI PHI Island holds a very special place in my heart and not because I am in love with beaches and waves, but because it was my first solo international trip as a reward for performance from my company. I was young and many showed objection towards my visit as an unmarried girl, but my parents trusted me and thus my first on arrival visa stamped on my passport. It was an amazing place... that time I found it very neat and clean beach and scenic view was awesome. Yes, i explored it in day time but I enjoyed and it was an amazing feeling.

  9. I have a fascination with non motorable places, especially those where boats are involved. And your experience tells me there much more at this island to be fascinated about. Thanks for the tips and recommendations

  10. Weed, I knew! But laughing gas. Whoa, that's innovative. And quite likely to be non-addictive. Must read up on it. Thanks for introducing me to the idea. (Not that I will try it ;)) I've heard a lot about Phi Phi Islands, and your picturesque blog reconfirms my decision that if I make a trip to Thailand, it will not be Phuket, Pattaya, or Bangkok but these kinds of off-beat islands!

  11. Ah, I was one of the many who took an Island hopping tour to Phi Phi from Phuket. Hehe. But the post brought back so many memories that I had to go back and check my blog posts from 7 years ago too! Amazing pictures!

  12. I never liked loud music and the smell of alcohol in people's mouth even when I was young. It's great to see you guys had a night life. I guess, the night life I'd only like to do is watch the moon with an iced matcha at hand. haha - MommyWithAGoal

  15. Absolutely loved this post! I always thought of Phi Phi Island as a day-trip paradise, but this has definitely opened my eyes to its lively side after the sun goes down. It’s like the island has a secret nightlife vibe tucked away. Thanks for sharing this —now I know Phi Phi deserves a spot on the nightlife list, not just for the daytime beach lovers.

  16. This Thailand trip didn't allow us time to visit Phi Phi islands but I want to. A girls trip there to enjoy the fun nightlife sounds tempting.
