After a long day of exploring, I was the last one to race against time. Yes, it had been a really long day. We had woke up early in La Spezia, took the train to Pisa, explored Pisa, took the train to Florence, walked to our apartment with all the luggage, waited outside the building for two hours, then after freshnening up left for exploring Florence on foot.
Phew! Now it was seven in the evening and we needed to walk for an hour to reach 'the spot' for the iconic Tuscan sunset.
Honestly, I was not at all in a mood to go through all the pain. Sunsets? Come on! I have witnessed hundreds of iconic ones. But hubs was adamant. He literally started dragging me. I for once thought that we were in Florence for just two days. The next day we would be exploring the Tuscan countryside. So today was the only day when we could possibly do it.
So we started walking briskly. At times we even ran looking at the watch. Sunset was supposed to take place at half past eight. We were so engrossed in going the distance that we did not even click pictures on the way. But the funny and (encouraging part) was that there was a big flock of tourists who were also running with us. We all were trying to cover the distance against time. We crossed the Arno river, walked across two bridges, leaped across barricades and climbed slopes. At last we reached the arch which was the starting point of the Piazza Michelengalo.
I heaved a sigh of relief only to be scared further. There were endless steps to the piazza. I literally dragged myself across the stairs. That was not the end, We had to cross a really wide road to reach the designated place. But when I reached the top, I was spellbound. Not by the view, but by the swarm of people! The place was so crowded that I could hardly get any view!
The tourists were really loud and there was various kinds of music playing. After a lot of pushing and shoving, we finally made to the place where we could see the sun. My Oh My! The sun was just an alibi. The entire city of Firenze could be seen from there. The mighty Duomo was the most prominent part of the view. The river Arno with the new bridge and old bridge (Ponte Vecchio) could be seen like toys. There was the Santa Croce and various other unrecognizable structures. On the opposite side were the lush green vegetations of Tuscany. Amidst all this was the mighty sun who was on its way to sleep.
The view and the ambiance cannot be described in words. Whether it was the splendid bird's eye view of the city or the orange sun or the music playing or the legion of enthusiastic tourists, every factor had a synergistic effect on the enjoyment quotient. We watched the sun go down and then strolled on the entire area till it got dark. I was really grateful to hubby for dragging my tired soul upto there.
If you are an early riser, you should definitely go for the sunrise!
