Fall of the big screen

by - April 08, 2025

When was the last time you watched a movie in the theatre? I was thinking that ours is one of the rarest families who goes to a multiplex to watch a movie, outside any movie screening/review events. However when I was discussing this with one of my friends, I realised that people have actually stopped watching films on the big screen altogether. Reason? The absence of promising releases.

The last time we as a family watched a movie was in November end and it was " Wicked". It was a visual extravaganza nevertheless and since we watched it in 3 D, it was even more fascinating. Did we enjoy it? Well absolutely! Because the sets were so pretty and the costumes were absolutely gorgeous! It was a long movie, and surprisingly, it was just the first part! Was the storyline gripping? Absolutely not!

Well, it was a review event and I think the Wicked team spent millions all around the world to pay for everyone to watch and post because all the influencers I know, were doing so. Would I have paid 700 INR for each person (we watched in 3D, IMAX) , making it 2800 for our family? No way!

I have come to realise that an easy way to judge the worth of anything is by weighing whether you are ready to spend your hard earned money on that or not. And movies are not on our priority list , given the rise of prices of school fees and overall lifestyle altogether! I guess this might be the case for others as well, given that theatres are empty even on Saturday nights. All the major actors and actresses have jumped on to the OTT wagon, and maybe they have also lost their interest!

Do you agree with me? Please feel free to share your thoughts!

  1. I feel good cinema will always pull people to the theatre. For instance, Tom Cruise's action movies, Steven Spielberg's Avatar, The Martian, The Walk, those effects can't be replicated at home. Good story, good effects, good actors... however, we are overloaded with content, and that hampers the movement, besides the expense of course. We are also lazy in some ways, taking entertainment for granted. I miss the cinema experience.

  2. The shift towards streaming platforms and the lack of compelling releases have definitely made me think twice about heading to the cinema. Your point about the cost is spot on; spending a significant amount for a family outing to watch a film that might not deliver feels unjustifiable. I also miss the communal experience of watching a movie on the big screen, but it's hard to ignore the convenience and affordability of home viewing. It's a bittersweet realization that the traditional cinema experience is evolving, and I wonder what it means for the future of filmmaking and theaters.
