The Royal Botanical Gardens, Sydney

by - May 04, 2020

The best part about these big cities like ( Sydney, Melbourne, New York, Istanbul, etc) is that they have a lot of green and open spaces.. Sydney has a number of parks like the Hyde park and all but the garden I was most interested in was the Royal Botanical Garden. It is HUGE! It's spread over a whopping 30 hectares and was founded by Governor Lachnan Macquarie in 1816. Maybe that explains the name of the farthest point: Mrs Macquarie's point. It's the oldest establishment in Australia and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1890.

There were plenty of reasons why I was so pumped up for this place ( while hubs was not). Firstly, it had the point which provided the best view of the Opera House and the Harbour bridge. I had done my bit of homework because I needed that perfect shot that would adorn our gallery wall. The Mrs Macquarie point was the most photographed point in the garden because it offered stunning views. The garden is the centre of all the picturesque spots of Sydney: the harbour, Opera House, Harbour Bridge, etc. We visited during spring season so that garden was bustling with purple jacarandas. The grass was way too green and  there were flowers everywhere.

There are mainly five parts of the Botanical Gardens: Lower Garden, Middle Garden, Palace Gardens, Bennelong Precinct and Palm Grove Centre.
We couldn't afford to lose time looking after every piece of fauna as it was afternoon already. We had rather exhaustive plans ahead. So we straightaway headed to the Mc quarie point although it was a long walk across the park. The moment we caught a glimpse of the Harbour bridge, I was floored!! The ocean was pristine blue, the Opera House stark white and two Australian flags fluttered mightily over the Harbour bridge in the maddening wind.

We walked all the way to the end point to the Mc Quaries chair and then it was time to bid goodbye. We met a number of tourists/ business travellers on the way and chatted with them briefly. Every one seemed happy there. A bunch of hot girls were having a picnic and they were extremely grateful to have me click them! I really wanted to absorb more of the serene vibes there but I looked at the sun and decided that I needed to visit the Harbour bridge up close and personal when the sun was still up!
Tip: if you want a perfect picture of the Harbour bridge and Opera House in the background, the best time to visit the garden is the morning. The sun would be on the opposite side and the pictures would be ideal! Also spring season promises lots of flowers plus vibrant violet Jacarandas everywhere.

Entry fees: Free
Opening hours: 7 AM to 6 30 PM throughout the year.
