The heat was sweltering in Delhi. It was just the beginning of May and one could not expect relief at least before the monsoons. There was only one way to beat this intolerable heat...escape!! That too to the chilly Himalayas!! A hill station was the perfect getaway for summers. But given the myriad of vacationing options in the vast Himalayas, it is quite a task to zero down to a particular spot. The hills are bustling with the people from the plains, and one needs to do the bookings well in advance. So after a quick research, we selected mussoorie. I had been there earlier; by the way there are hardly any places in India where my parents have not taken me. I have been very lucky in this aspect. Anyways I didnot have any qualms in going there again. I had to escape the heat and mussoorie was a beautiful feasible option.
After boggling through trip advisor , we selected and booked Prince hotel. The view from there was amazing and it was within our budget. Then began the countdown. Finally the day arrived when we needed to leave. Owing to a busy schedule, as I always crib, we took the overnight bus to dehradun after hubby finished his hospital chores. We boarded the bus at 11pm and reached Dehradun at 4 30 am. From there we took a taxi to mussoorie. I could already feel the nip in the air and I was loving it!!
Now it was 5 in the morning when we reached uphill...Mussoorie. Not a soul could be seen except for us. Which hotel do you expect to allow such an early check in?? But lucky us and the sweetness of our hotel staff, they let us in. Overwhelmed, we dumped our luggage in the old colonial style room and set out for what we do best....explore!!!
Stomachs gnawing in hunger, we entered the first restaurant we saw open and ate to our heart's content. This is the best thing about himalayas..the cuisine here is lip smacking!!
Recharged now we set out the explore the queen of hills..on foot!!
TRAVEL TIPS:
1. Book your hotel well in advance. you dont want to roam aimlessly with luggage in search of shelter!!
2.Better to book directly from the hotel. Booking from agents cost you an unnecessary extra amount of money.
3.Dont forget your woolens and umbrellas. Its pretty unpredictable up in the hills.

sitting on the steps of our hotel balcony. wrapped in a woolen shawl. would this have been possible in delhi heat?? |
our loyal carriers(read legs) took us to some unknown territories not even mentioned in guide books...the lost palace of prince of kapurthala. |
we had climbed the hills high enough to get this view!! |
our endless hiking made me throw off my woolen shawl!! |
the waterfalls of company garden |
walking endlessly... |
found a place where i could sit and get clicked as well!! |
again some unknown territory of this hill town!! |
dressed up as a local Himalayan girl. |
in company garden, we rented these traditional local costumes and got clicked!! |
trying out as many poses as possible in the sanctioned fees :D |
hubby again trying out his antics!! |

ReplyDeleteWow..Lovely write up and cool pictures. Whoever goes to Mussoorie should also go to Dehradun. And as far as accommodation is concerned, there are plenty of budget hotels in Dehradun.
ReplyDeleteI love a trip to hills to beat the heat. This summer I am planning to go to Adirondacks, let's see if that materializes. I so wish to stay in a colonial inn or hotel, just like you did. And amazing shots.
